Battle themes emerge for deficit reduction fight in Congress

(CNN) -- There is a war going on in Washington, and the politicians waging it can't even agree on what kind it is.
To Republicans, President Barack Obama and Democrats are waging class warfare by proposing tax reforms that would make wealthy Americans pay more than they do now.
"When you pick one area of the economy and you say, 'We're going to tax those people because most people are not those people,' that's class warfare," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."
Democrats refer to political warfare, with Republicans blocking the Obama administration's initiatives to better their chances of defeating him in next year's election.
"I don't think people like that style of politics and that's the reality ... we'll be facing in November 2012," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said on the same program.

Apple rejects pollution allegations

Beijing, China (CNN) -- Apple has defended itself against allegations its suppliers in China committed environmental violations.
In a report, "The Other Side of Apple II," a coalition of Chinese non-governmental environmental organizations detailed alleged pollution caused by Apple's supply chains in China, among those companies handling iPhone and iPad parts. The 46-page report provided maps showing more than 20 suspected and confirmed Apple suppliers, as well as photos and descriptions of the alleged damage caused to local environments and communities.

US 'to sue a dozen banks over housing bubble mortgages'

The US is planning to sue more than a dozen major banks for misrepresenting the quality of mortgages they sold during the housing bubble, the New York Times reports.
The Federal Housing Finance Agency will argue that the banks should have known the securities were not sound.

Aug 25 (Reuters) - Libyan commandos fighting Muammar Gaddafi came close to capturing the toppled leader on Wednesday when they raided a private home in Tripoli where he appeared to have been hiding, Paris Match magazine said on Thursday.
Citing a source in a unit which it said was coordinating among intelligence services from Arab states and Libyan rebels, the French weekly said on its website that these services believed Gaddafi was still somewhere in the Libyan capital.

Dadaab, Kenya (CNN) -- Humphry Musyoka, a doctor at the world's largest refugee camp, knows well how quickly dehydration can ravage the body of a child.
A young girl who seems OK one minute can turn on a dime. But Musyoka, who works at the Dadaab refugee complex in Kenya, says he has no time to think about loss.
"More are still coming, so we have to do something about that," he told CNN's Anderson Cooper. "It's very challenging mentally, I'd say, because you lose life. But what do you do about the next one?"

Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi visits Sudan

China's foreign minister has arrived in Sudan, the first high-level visit by Khartoum's key ally since South Sudan became independent in July.
Yang Jiechi will then travel from Khartoum to South Sudan on Tuesday.

Asian stocks dip after U.S. credit downgrade

Jobless rates jump in 28 states in June

(Reuters) - Jobless rates jumped in June from the month before in more than half of the U.S. states as sinking public employment reversed the trend of steadily improving labor conditions in the first half of 2011, Labor Department data released on Friday showed.

Piers Morgan rejects accusation of phone-hacking involvement

(CNN) -- Piers Morgan, host of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" and a former editor of two British tabloid newspapers, rejected as "nonsense" a British lawmaker's allegations Tuesday that he participated in phone hacking.
Morgan said he may have been a victim of hacking, but was never a perpetrator.
Louise Mensch, a Conservative member of Parliament on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, made the allegations during a hearing before the committee Tuesday.

Of the failing banks -- those whose so-called core capital fell below 5% -- five are from HHhhhSpain, two from Greece* and one from Austria, according to results released by euro area banking watchdogs. Of those that passed but could stand to bulk up, with core capital of 5%-6%, nearly half -- seven -- are from Spain.
